The first concert of the Győr Philharmonic Orchestra’s 17:18 subscription series opens with Mendelssohn’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream Overture, composed in 1826. In this work — written when he was barely seventeen — the young genius captured the magical whirl of Shakespeare’s play and secured his place among the great masters of European music.
The programme continues with his Symphony No. 3 in A minor, the “Scottish,” sketched during a journey to Scotland in 1829 and completed and premiered in 1842. The work, inspired by the country’s dramatic landscapes and rich historical atmosphere, will be conducted by Polish maestro Michael Maciaszczyk, who is himself an accomplished violinist.
The evening’s host will be music historian Dr. Balázs Szabó.
